Yanet Gonzalez's Story

Embracing Service: A Journey Shaped by Opportunity
Growing up in a low-income Mexican household, weekends were spent in strawberry fields and stables where my dad worked, while weekdays saw us hustling in different ways to make ends meet. My dad worked tirelessly, and my mom, despite her struggles with mental health, was a pillar of strength. Through all this, my foundation was one of grit, love, and an unwavering commitment to family.
Yet, amidst the bustling rhythm of our lives, it was the moments of challenge that etched themselves deepest into my memory. As a child, I became my father’s voice, bridging linguistic gaps as he pursued his entrepreneurial dreams in a country that offered him hope for a better life. Despite the fear and anxiety, I felt as a 7,8,9, and 10-year-old translating grown-up conversations filled with jargon, my determination and willingness to learn helped me navigate conversations and translate aspirations into reality, laying the groundwork for a future shaped by service.
High school brought with it dreams of breaking barriers and carving out a path previously untrodden in my family: the pursuit of higher education. With unwavering resolve, I set my sights on college, becoming the first in my family to walk across the stage and claim a degree. Armed with a BA in business from Vanguard University, I embarked on a journey that would meld my passion for business with a deep-seated desire to effect change.
A stint as a youth group coordinator at my church awakened within me a newfound calling—one that went beyond boardrooms and bottom lines. It was during my time at The Braille Institute that the intersection of business acumen and human compassion became abundantly clear. Here, I witnessed the transformative power of community and the profound impact of service on lives often overlooked.
After doing some consulting and later joining Templo Calvario CDC, I found myself immersed in a world where purpose met profession. As COO, I had the privilege of crafting programs and helping shape brighter futures, each success story fueling my fervor for service and igniting a passion that burned brighter with each passing day. Now, as the Chief Development Officer, I have the incredible opportunity to deepen my commitment to serving my community.
In the faces of the youth we serve, I glimpse echoes of my own journey—of struggles overcome and dreams realized. In the smiles of parents attending our classes, I see the resilience of my own family mirrored back at me. And in the joy of students mastering English at our charter school, I find validation of the power of opportunity and the ripple effect of benevolence.
My faith and community have been my guiding stars, illuminating a path paved with gratitude and an unyielding commitment to pay it forward. For every opportunity afforded to me, for every hand that lifted me up in times of need, I am forever indebted. And so, I choose to honor those gifts by serving others, by channeling my experiences into avenues of empowerment and advocacy.
For me, service is not merely a vocation—it is a calling, a testament to the transformative power of compassion and the enduring legacy of those who believed in me. In giving back, I honor the past, enrich the present, and pave the way for a future where opportunity knows no bounds.
