The Annual Giving Review: A Simple 1-Page Template to Maximize Your Impact

Fulfilling philanthropic engagement begins with cause alignment. We often are “influenced” to give or help by friends, advertisements, and other persuasive messaging pleading for our care and concern. We want to help all the organizations that are addressing real problems or suffering, but this is not the way to get meaningfully involved. Rather, focusing on the issues that matter the most to us is key to a committed involvement and a rewarding experience. Certain problems or challenges have likely touched you or your family/friends. You’ve seen the direct impact of these problems on people you care about and know the pain or difficulties they have lived through. Helping to overcome these problems, then, becomes a more personally fulfilling endeavor. You really care about these issues and want to make a meaningful contribution of skills, resources or time to impact those affected. This care leads to cause alignment that most likely will produce a fulfilling giving experience.

We do annual reviews for our investments, careers, and even our fitness goals. But when was the last time you sat down and reviewed your giving?

Philanthropy is not just about writing checks — it’s about aligning your generosity with your deepest values and ensuring your contributions create the greatest possible impact. A short, intentional review at the end of each year can help you give with clarity, confidence, and joy.

That’s why I’ve created a simple 1-Page Annual Giving Review Template. It takes just 15 minutes to complete, but it can transform how you give in the year ahead.

Why an Annual Giving Review Matters
  • Clarity: Understand where your money and time went.
  • Impact: Measure if your giving created the results you hoped for.
  • Alignment: Ensure your giving reflects your values and priorities.
  • Planning: Decide where to focus next year.
The 1-Page Review Framework
  1. Causes Supported
List the nonprofits, causes, or community groups you supported.
  2. Amount Given
Record your total giving: cash, donor-advised fund grants, stock donations, or even in-kind support.
  3. Impact / Experience
Reflect briefly: Did this giving bring you joy, fulfillment, or visible results? Did you feel connected to the outcomes?
  4. Future Focus
Note whether you’ll continue, increase, or redirect support next year.
Reflection Questions to Guide You
  • Did I give to the causes that matter most to me?
  • Am I spreading my giving too thin across too many organizations?
  • Which nonprofits showed me they are effective and transparent?
  • Do I want to involve family or colleagues more in my giving decisions?
Next Steps

Once you complete your review, you’ll have a clear snapshot of your giving journey and a road map for the future. You may decide to focus your giving, increase your involvement with a few nonprofits, or explore tools like Donor-Advised Funds.
